A headache is one of the most common symptoms experienced by people from all walks of life. It can be a symptom of a more serious medical condition, but in most cases, it is just mild and temporary. While there are already a lot of different treatments for it such as over-the-counter drugs and pain relievers, natural alternatives are also preferred by many — one of which is aromatherapy.
Aromatherapy is a natural alternative treatment that uses essential oils extracted from plants. The healing properties of plants were discovered by early civilizations and were eventually used to relieve headaches, migraines, and other conditions such as depression, anxiety, panic, and sleeping disorders.
Essential oils come from different parts of plants such as the bark, flowers, roots, leaves, and even the seeds, among others. They are absorbed into the nervous system to alleviate the pain coming from different parts of the brain. However, they cannot be applied directly on skin unless mixed with carrier oils. For headaches and migraines, the recommended oils are Lavender, Peppermint, Bay, Melissa, Jasmine, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary, while the carrier oils can be Sweet Almond, Apricot Kernel, Avocado, Coconut, and Sesame.
Aromatherapy can be done either by direct application onto the skin or by inhalation. It also comes in the form of candles, massage oils, lotions, and many more.
