Skullcap or Scutellaria is a genus of flowering plants that has over 300 species. Not all these, however, can be used for headache relief. Scutellaria lateriflora (or Blue Skullcap), which is endemic in North America, is the one often used as an herbal relief for the condition. So, how does it work?
Blue Skullcap is believed to be a sedative nervine that causes drowsiness on individuals who drink it. Its tranquilizing effect is what links it to headache relief. Moreover, it can be used to treat conditions like anxiety, insomnia, and nervous tension – all of which can lead to a serious headache attack if neglected.
Skullcap can be taken in the form of capsules, tablets, tea, or tinctures, but the dose of tinctures will depend on the age of the individual who’s taking it.
At present, the use of skullcap as a medical relief for headache is still not widely and clinically prescribed as there are still very few empirical findings that can prove its efficacy. If you want to give it a try, we suggest that you converse with your healthcare provider first so you’d know whether the properties of this herbal medicine can help you or cause you harm.
