Ironically, the same medications that are supposed to relieve your pain are the same ones causing it. In the UK, the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, or NICE, recommended a tolerance for painkillers and the extensive use of acupuncture in healing the headaches.
People who take painkillers are more prone to “medical overuse headaches” – a condition that occurs as regularly as migraines. Though no definitive data has been acquired so far, the World Health Organization has concluded that about five percent of all known cases of headaches are caused by painkillers. While drinking painkillers is a direct reaction to the headaches, the intake of such has been proven to cause more pain.
“This can end up getting into a vicious cycle where your headache gets worse, so you take more painkillers, so your headache gets worse and this just becomes worse and worse and worse,” said Prof. Martin Underwood, the lead panelist from NICE.
