Migraine Relief: Butterbur

Posted by on Jan. 11, 2013

In some of our previous posts, we shared a number of herbal medicines, alternatives that are considered healthy as they pose fewer side effects compared with pharmaceutical drugs. This one we’re about to discuss is different. Experts derived a dietary supplement out of this herb in order to lessen its harmful side effects on human health. This plant’s scientific named is Petasites hybridus, but is more popularly known as butterbur.

Butterbur is an herb used to treat fever and spasms. It is also an effective pain reliever. According to experts, substances such as petasin and isopetasin found in butterbur plants help counter inflammation and spasms in the body. That’s what accounts for the headache relief. This plant, however, also contains something called pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PA), which can damage the liver.

To maximize the benefits of butterbur, experts created Petadolex – a butterbur dietary supplement stripped of PAs. Headache sufferers who tried the 50mg and 75mg dosages of the supplement reported notable relief after a few days of medication.

If you’re looking to try this butterbur extract, but have pre-existing conditions like liver problems, go and check with your doctor or other health professional first to know if the extract might be harmful to you. On the other hand, if a headache is your only problem, then butterbur is probably the relief you’ve been looking for.
