Lithium is a naturally occurring salt that is used to treat episodes of manic depression or mood disorders. It costs less than other medicines and it can also be used in treating cluster headaches. How lithium works specifically is yet to be discovered, but there is a possibility that it affects the function of a part of the brain called the hypothalamus.
For headaches, lithium is usually combined with other medicines like corticosteroids or ergotamine to make it more effective. The medication comes in different forms, which include capsules, syrups, and tablets.
Like other drugs, lithium might come with side effects such as tremors, weakness, weight gain, and issues with the kidney and thyroid. If you are considering taking this drug, it is best to consult a doctor first to avoid experiencing any side effects it may cause.
